Training for Overall Health

Most people I meet in the fitness world start off training for aesthetics. Whether they say it upfront or not, it usually comes out eventually: “I want to get stronger, sure, but I really want to lose weight.” Or, “I wouldn’t mind being more toned.” Or, “I want Miley Cyrus arms.” The list goes on.

I totally get it, and I don’t think having those aesthetic goals on the back burner is a bad thing at all. However, what should be on the front burner is what directly improves your health, enhances your quality of life, and helps you age more comfortably.

Health Should be The Most Important Goal You Have

We are all getting older, but when you take care of your body the right way, you continue feeling great through every stage of life. I want you to keep playing your favorite sports. I want you to be able to run after your kids or your dogs. I want you to bend, twist, flex, reach, play, jump, and live easily and comfortably.

That is why flexibility, mobility, core stability, and functional strength training take center stage in my programs. Everyone’s sessions are tailored to their unique fitness level and goal, but every workout includes a blend of these key focus areas so you can train for overall, lifelong health.

Thank You For Listening!

Now that you’ve read my little soapbox moment, here is why I believe the health-first approach actually works better in the long run.

When people chase short-term aesthetic goals, they often resort to extreme diets and aggressive workout routines that don’t match their actual lifestyle, needs, or interests. This almost always leads to burnout, injury, or elevated stress. Conversely, when you focus on movement quality, joint health, progressive strength, and sustainable nutrition, your body thrives from an overall health perspective—and as a natural byproduct, those aesthetic goals you kept on the back burner start showing up anyway!

You might be thinking, “This makes sense, but where do I even begin?”

Start by focusing on a few small daily habits:

  • Prioritize Sleep: One area most people can improve immediately is sleep. Try going to bed and waking up around the same time every day—it creates a incredible foundation for your overall health. With good sleep means energy for the day to move your body.
  • Build Daily Flexibility: Identify areas where you feel tight. Start with a quick 5-minute daily stretch routine and build on it gradually over time.

  • Support Your Core: Strengthening your core is one of the best ways to eliminate lingering lower back tightness, fixes imbalances, and creates a safer foundation for daily movement. Again, start with just a 5-minute routine each day and build consistency week by week.
  • Sneak in Extra Movement: Park a little farther from building entrances, or if you can, walk or bike to run nearby errands. If you have a desk job set a time to get up once an hour or at least every two hours and try to walk or move for 10 minutes or so.
  • Find an Environment You Enjoy being active in: Join a group or workout community that sparks your interest. Not all fitness spaces are created equal! If traditional spaces aren’t your thing, working out at home with an online trainer whose philosophy aligns with yours is a fantastic option. (And if my message speaks to you, I’d love to hear from you!)

Ready to Take Action Right Now?

Write down one non-aesthetic movement goal on a piece of paper. Then, think of one small thing you can do today to move closer to it. It could be as simple as searching for a beginner plank tutorial, looking up local groups to try out their exercise prgram or run club, or reach out to a trainer to see if what they have to offer aligns with you.

I hope this inspires you to shift your mindset from short-term aesthetic targets to lifelong health goals—and that you take that first small step today!
